Daddy Obama Understands

Lately there’s been a little typical sort of political flare-up because I said something that everybody knows is true. …

Oh, is that why there’s been a little typical sort of political flare-up? Because Barack Obama said something everybody knows is true? And what was it again that we all know is true? — Oh yes, it was that the reason the majority of working class Americans don’t support Obama’s policies is because “they get bitter; they cling to guns, or religion, or antipathy to people who aren’t like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment, or anti-trade sentiment, as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Now, some people might feel it’s extremely condescending of an Ivy League millionaire to dismiss the legitimate concerns of a large proportion of American citizens about the erosion of their 2nd amendment rights, the rampant problems associated with illegal immigration, or their deep dedication to religious convictions, as just “a way to explain their frustrations.” But what these cynical critics fail to realize is that Obama wasn’t attacking these poor benighted folks, he was making excuses for their ignorance. He’s actually on their side, don’t you see?

… Which is that there are a whole bunch of folks in small towns in Pennsylvania, in towns right here in Indiana, in my home town in Illinois, who are bitter. They are angry. They feel like they’ve been left behind. They feel like nobody’s paying attention to what they’re goin’ through. …

And that explains why they hold onto these ridiculous notions about guns and religion and immigration. It isn’t that these issues are actually important. They’re just expressing their frustration at feeling “left behind,” kind of like little kids who get petulant and sulky when they don’t feel anybody’s paying attention to them.

… So I said, well, you know, when you’re bitter, you turn to what you can count on. So people, they vote about guns. Or they take comfort from their faith, and their family and their community. And they get mad about illegal immigrants who are coming over to this country. Or they get frustrated about how things are changing. That’s a natural response. …

Obama understands. Other, less enlightened, politicians may take these citizens’ concerns at face value and think the problem is that they don’t want to lose their right to own guns, or that they’re concerned about the social and economic impacts of illegal immigration, but Obama knows better. The real problem is that these folks don’t feel like they’re getting enough attention.

Once Obama convinces them he’s paying attention, they’ll realize they don’t really need to own guns (which we all know is not only unnecessary, but dangerous). They’ll no longer need to cling to their archaic religious beliefs (that don’t include racial separatism or anti-American sentiment). They’ll realize that illegal immigration isn’t really a problem because, once we grant them all citizenship, they won’t be illegal anymore. And, not only can the taxpayers absorb the costs of increased immigration, they can no doubt be made to fork over a few entitlements for working class folks, too. (He didn’t actually state this outright, but he did imply that he’d make sure they’re not “left behind” anymore.) As an enlightened Democrat, Obama knows that every problem can be solved by a simple redistribution of wealth. And, once these poor benighted souls understand that there are goodies in the sack for them too, they’ll come around to seeing that daddy Obama really is the candidate for them.

… And, now I didn’t say it as well as I should have, because the truth is that these traditions that are passed on from generation to generation, those are important. That’s what sustains us. But what is absolutely true is that people don’t feel like they’re being listened to. …

And here’s where he pulls the switcheroo, and changes the subject from making excuses for the unenlightened masses to pretending he’s the answer they’re looking for. Because, unlike the other candidates (who are actually addressing the issues about which the voters are expressing concern), Obama is listening to them. — Ironically, he isn’t actually hearing them, but that’s because he already knows the answers. He alone understands that it isn’t really about the issues, but about appeasing their feelings of bitterness and resentment.

… And what we need is a government that is actually paying attention. A government that is fighting for workin’ people, day in and day out. Makin’ sure that we are allowing them to live out the American Dream. And that’s what this campaign is about.

And here’s where he ties it all up with a neat little bow. Obama is the candidate who will deliver the American dream. To the workin’ people. Amen.

  1. Excellent assestment!! Why do pundits and ignorant politians dont see it this way? I guess because they prefer to stir up controversy than to actually put what Obama says in its full context!!

  2. I’d vote for him …

    even though I’m yellow :-)

  3. I have to agree with Donnell about the need to consider Obama’s remarks in full context. Remember that like any good preacher, he was talking to the choir.

He was in San Francisco, talking to local movers and shakers. San Francisco has distinguished itself in several notable particulars.

The folks there outlawed gun and ammunition ownership until the State told them they couldn’t. They have annual parades and celebrations making mockery of religion and religious ideals. They have declared themselves a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants.

In that context, what the Black Chameleon had to say made perfect good sense. He connected with them by mocking those they oppose.

Isn’t this what a great uniter is supposed to do?

  4. Thanks for a very good analysis! I am a Republican turned Dem for this election in order to vote for Hillary Clinton. At least she has core beliefs that don’t require “hoodwinking” us rubes in Pennsylvania. I think the South Side of Chicago is still a hellhole – why couldn’t messiah obama “heal” his own district?

  5. Well, Typical, I hope you turn back into a Republican after the primary. McCain is going to need all the help he can get. :)

For me, the most important part of the primary is the local races. The more local the politics, the more directly it impacts me. In November, I may have a choice between a Democrat and a Republican but, in the primary, I have a chance to influence which Republicans get on the November ballot. (We have a lot at stake in this election in southern Oregon.)

BTW, I was born in PA. Ever hear of a little town called Bloomsburg?

  6. What Obama left out was, “… and then they dig further into the American nightmare by clinging to right wing radio and cable news where multi-millionaire, non-expert pundits pretend to understand their plight. Due to general incuriosity, not thinking for themselves and years of pent up anger and bitterness, they continue voting Republican and hating this strawman enemy, ‘the Left.’ These same people buy almost nothing but sweat-shop goods from China to save buck, but wonder why there are no American jobs left.”

  7. Why is it the one we disagree with is always the non-thinker? Aren’t they entitled to think that one’s ideas aren’t working for them?

  8. …I don’t know about you all, but whenever I pull up at the pump to pay upwards of $3.50/gallon, I do get a tad….bitter. I’m sure Barack’s words were aimed at identifying himself with the “working class Americans” and therefore weren’t TOTALLY viable…but I am bitter, and for my feelings as a US citizen to be recognized and confronted is better policy than to say the “economy is as strong as ever” as McCain once said.

…besides, Barack’s attempt at bridging the “class gap” is better than Hillary drinking beer and taking shots in Indiana LOL. (YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!)

  9. TCS, why are you “bitter” about gas being $3.50 a gallon? And what does the price of gas have to do with the right to keep and bear arms, or the illegal immigrants flooding our borders? Or people’s religious convictions?

What was offensive about Obama’s statement was his wholesale dismissal of the very real issues that are of concern to working class people (and a lot of other folks as well), with the patronizing comment that they’re just bitter about something that has nothing to do with those concerns, and they’re using those issues to rationalize their resentment. It’s not only arrogant of him to assume he understands what they think and care about better than they do themselves, but the notion that these issues are so trivial as to not even be taken seriously shows that he’s deeply out of touch with the reality these people are living.

He claims to be “listening” to them, but he obviously doesn’t hear what they’re saying. He ascribes motivations to them that make it sound like he sees them as petulant children whom he expects to turn to him to make things right. Even when they tell him that’s not what they’re saying, he insists that he’s right and everybody knows it. That kind of arrogance doesn’t play well.

I agree with you about Hillary. She’s desperate. And people aren’t buying her act. (Though it’s not that different than Obama going bowling.) They’re both trying to show that they’re in touch with middle America, and all they’re proving is that they’re not. They should stop trying to fake it. Both of them. Though I did get a kick out of Obama’s comment about Hillary in a duck blind with a six-shooter. I’m sure he’s never been duck hunting — neither have I. But at least I know the difference between a six-shooter and a shotgun.

  10. I take comfort in my faith in guns! ;-)
The thing about Obama is that he’s becoming more of a politician every day, looking for things to say that people want to hear. And it’s really fun to see him switcheroo on Iraq – from “we leave Iraq as soon as I take office” to “responsible staged withdrawl”. How will the lefty loons respond when it becomes clear that we’ll have a lot of soldiers left in Iraq after Obama’s first term? I think it will be fun to watch. It will be fun to watch McCain make him admit during the debatyes that he won’t be withdrawing the troops any time soon. Keep up the good work NotYourDaddy!

  11. Thanks, Tuco. And welcome to Daddyland. Y’all come back now, hear?

  12. You are stuck with me, the RSS feed works great!

  13. Maybe Obama thought that you go duck hunting with the pistols that had a single shot shotgun shell underneath the main barrel like the used in the Civil War. Oh wait, that’d make whitey look good so he probably doesn’t know those ever existed either…

If he thought the questions in the last debate were tough he’s not seen anything yet…

  14. Oddly, the price of gas doesn’t bother me. When I was growing up, it was 25 cents a gallon, and the attendant would check your tires, your oil, wash the windows.

    Times change.

What does bother me is the idiocy that has led to turning food into ethanol as a way to “save the planet”.

    That’s stupid.

  15. I’m with you there, max! Did you see my post on Alternative Energy and the Law of Unintended Consequences?

  16. LOL…25 cents/gallon. I’m not just bothered by gas prices I AM ABSOLUTELY PISSED that gas is sold at a price that is nearly 1/2 that of the minimum hourly wage in America. Now if you have enough money to shovel out $120 for a fill up, then by all means do it…

…just don’t disregard and be inconsiderate of those who may not be so comfortable with shelling out so much (I’ll save the whole “Bush went into Iraq for oil to begin with, so why are the prices so high and where the HELL is OPEC???” comments for later.)

  17. Very, very well said. Obama is a bit like Teflon, hopefully some of this stuff will eventually stick and people will realise the emperor has no clothes on.

Anyhow, I found your site through the Australian blog It’s a Matter of Opinion and have linked you on my own blog hosted by those guys, it’s called Urban Kvetching, feel free to stop by :-)

    Keep up the good work!

  18. Your piece on Obama essentially makes his case for him. While you follow directions and obsess over immigration and a well regulated militias, many of our other rights are under attack. Habeas Corpus, privacy, forced to remove shoes at airports, etc.

It’s funny to see a right wing site use the “not your daddy” concept while you Republicans are all too willing to cower behind the President for fear of all of the “Islam-o-fascists” that apparently want to kill us. Statistically speaking, you have a better chance of dying in a lightning strike than a terrorist attack. Same goes for Cancer and car accidents.

Truth be told, your party has done very, very little about the “immigration problem.” Only a fool would think that there is actually a threat to your second amendment rights. Meanwhile gas prices (which have gone up how much over the last 8 years?) have a direct effect on your commute to school or work and the transport of food and goods in our country. Don’t worry, if things get bad enough you can always use your gun to acquire gas/food or kill that pesky “Islam-o-fascist” lurking on your front porch.

Never mind all of the flip flopping McCain has done. Remember his 2000 platform? Or are you blocking that out.

  19. Hi Kenny. Welcome to Daddyland.

I see you haven’t read much of my blog. But that’s OK. Some people have trouble processing individuals, and need to lump everybody with whom they disagree under the same label and attribute to them all the aspects they ascribe to that label. It makes the world much simpler if you can see everything in black and white, so to speak.

    Have a nice day. :)

  20. He who is unable to engage intellectually will resort to insults.

    You said:

Ha ha. Are you talking about my comment or your condescending sarcasm riddled “critique” and distortions of Obama’s speech?

  22. Good write. I am so tired of the sheeple sitting around and eating their Hope & Change cereal.
